One way to fundraise using the power of Facebook

A few weeks ago at Twestival Singapore, I came across a booth with a very interesting initiative - fund-raising through Facebook. It was the Give.SG booth and they weren't collecting donations or anything like that. All they asked for was that people with a Facebook account become fans of their Facebook page. This aroused my curiosity and so I went to investigate more.

What the Give.SG team did was gather sponsors to agree to donate NT$10 to the Morakot survivors in Taiwan for each new fan on their Facebook fan page. The money will be given to Mercy Relief in Taiwan and World Vision Singapore to provide clean water to the survivors.

They were aiming to get 10,000 fans to raise NT$100,000 and today, they've crossed the mark! This is really a fantastic campaign that harnesses the power of the Facebook community not only to generate awareness but to raise funds in a low-cost, quick and easy manner.

What's next? The team is now looking for other initiatives which they can help raise funds for. If there's a cause you would like them to know about, drop them an e-mail at info@give.sg. In the meantime, join their Facebook fan page and help them raise more funds!

Twestival Singapore 2009

Twestival Singapore

There is an exciting piece of news from the Asian region happening this weekend - Twestival 2009! So what exactly is Twestival?

Short for Twitter Festival, Twestival is an event run purely by volunteers around the world to bring people offline together, particularly the local Twitter community, for a great cause. It has been held in more than 202 cities worldwide and has ranged from a myriad activities from casual cafe dinners to charity bazaars.

This weekend, Singapore will be having its very first Twestival on September 12th with a carnival offering food and games! Their aim is to raise $10,000 for the Children's Cancer Foundation: Singapore - a foundation that builds a support community for children with cancer and their families. If you're in town this weekend, do drop by Twestival and have a good time with some local "Tweeples".

Note: I've been told by the organizers that there are some extra specials for Twitter users so start gathering your Twitter pals for this Sat.

Details are as follows:

Date : 12th September 2009 (Saturday)
